Jeff:
I just went thru the same situation last week. I am getting ready to put my old WW2 vintage ATD transmitter on the air. I thought I would pull the dynamotor end caps and take a look at the bearings, as I have not run this thing since 1966 when I bought it. I should have taken it outside and flushed the bearings with brake cleaning fluid, but it has been really cold here in Maine for some time.
When I pulled the end bell and removed the bearing cover, the old grease was indeed dried out. The only thing I could find at the local auto parts store was some red lithium bearing grease. But, it's probably better than the original.
When I pulled the other end cap off I found the fan with two set screws. Same deal as yours... one would break loose, the other one was stuck. I put a drop of KANO Labs Kroil on the set screw and a drop or two on the end of the shaft and let it sit overnight. The next day the set screw came right out and the fan slid off the shaft with a little coaxing from a wood wedge.
Kano Kroil is like magic. I think you can only buy direct from them:
