Yes, true. When I was in high school, many decades ago, I met at the old Rhodes department store in Seattle ( now the art museum ), a gentleman in the furniture 
department who had been a radio operator on merchant ships in WW1. He told me he had "gone in the water twice" when his ships went down, torpedoed.
He told me that when atmospheric static was high, it would knock the crystal detector out of adjustment.

>Hue - remember too  a nearby  lightning strike  would  take out a fixed detector...  it will also whack  the sensitive spot on  a  manually adjustable detector... but there are always a few  more spots  you can  find... so  in a way... the  manual diddled one  has  the best chance of operating no matter what....    Ed#
