No such thing as an AM Window. It's a fallacy dating back to when the bands
were actually crowded and few used the mode. AM aka 'fone' is allowed
anywhere SSB aka 'AM lite' is allowed and vice versa. If a frequency is
empty and someone wants to use it, good for them. Voluntarily segregating
or restricting your operations to one small area of the band is part of the
reason so much of it is a wasteland. Especially since the expansion of
'fone privileges on 40 and 80m back in 2006.

Add to that the lack of anyone calling CQ - an art apparently lost on many,
newcomer and otherwise. A lot of folks mention that they "listened" for
activity and found none. Very few say they called CQ and got no response.
So many people waiting for someone else to start the party so they can join
in at their convenience just exacerbates the problem.
