There is one frequently reprinted photo showing a codetalker using a TBY but the radio is #1 out of its carry bag and #2 missing the bottom section.
In other words, inoperable. A staged photo for the public.
There's a better photo of one of them kneeling down with the radio in bag on his back and he using the microphone,
and one knee of his trousers torn out. This is a better photo for you to get an idea from. The photo showed up in a military history magazine a few
years back. If you absolutely cannot find it, you might let me know, and I could scan it, altho I have to look for it. I also have the radio but it's stored
not here in the same city I live in. I applaud your valuation of accuracy in your work. I might look for this photo anyway, later today or tomorrow.
I was just now doing a quick look for 'TBY radio' and 'codetalker WWII' and I see there's not really a good selection of photos nor is the photo I described
above online. I may not have done enough digging but I'm through with that. There is one militaria forum with some photos of the set
http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/48607-usmc-tby-radios/
however I still think the militaria magazine photo is more useful to give you the idea how it actually was used in operation. I will look for that photo.
