However, conversely, I had someone make me an offer once and I turned
it down... and it sold for only half what the person offered. They had
found once elsewhere for about what they had offered me.

So not all is bad... just evaluate the offer one at a time.

I recently got my feet wet again in Ebay, sold a paper item, as a learning
experience for running some ham gear thru there.
I was very surprised to get a "Would you end this auction right now for
$----- ? " message. Of course I didn't reply; too dumb
a message to deign replying. I wonder why this lives on, and why people
fall for it. The item I had, sold for about twice the
"end early" offer. I have seen a pretty rare WW2 Japan radio disappear
suddenly off Ebay, no doubt due to the same
game. I had a rare headphone, imagine if you can a U.S. headphone selling
for over $500, surprised the hell out of me too,
this was a few years back, and I got a "end early" offer on that too.
Real dumb.
