During the summers of 1968 and 1969 I was radio op on a research vessel
operating out of Woods Hole, MA. We held an experimental license (KC2XIV)
which allowed us to operate SSB on several channels in the 5 to 15 MHz range
(I can't remember the frequencies), plus one DSB AM channel at 2252 kHz
using our standard AM marine band transceiver. Although we monitored 2182
kHz at all times, we had no facilities to communicate on frequencies in the
300 to 500 kHz range, although they were still in use at that time.
Authorized emissions on the 500 kHz distress frequency were either A1
(straight CW) or A2 ( telegraph-keyed amplitude tone modulation) in the case
of emergency or lifeboat transmitters.
