Back in the day, there were a lot of commercial ops who really swung
their fists, maybe out of boredom, or (worse) being a little tipsy, or
just wanted to have a "distinctive" fist. Really showed up on 500Kc.
Also a fair number of ships I think still used A2 emission on 500, maybe
even a few foreign vessels running chopper-generated A2. Some really
raucous notes there. Not so from the coast stations.

I only ran into one op on the Navy freqs with a really bad fist, not
counting an occasional newbie. He was on a USNS fleet oiler in the
Mediterranean, running around between ports near US air bases. A bunch
of us from NGR visited him one time in port in Piraeus, where he
apologized for his fist. Said while he could copy really fast, he
suffered from a sort of stage fright when his signal was going out over
the air. We dealt with his poor fist for over a year.
