Dave, I think you're onto something there. The antenna adjust control, 198, 15-250 pF, with some wire swapping could maybe act as a 
"throttle control" regeneration control on the first RF. In that case, with the feedback advanced, the first tuned circuit would define
the selectivity of the circuit, and the antenna control would not be actually required to align anything. This way the receiver could be
operated without any external Q-mult control in very much like its original config.   I'll be looking at the manual again today.
