Sad ending, however perhaps some of the locals will pursue
the search and recover if they have access to map?

Maybe the story is not over yet.

I believe about 5~6 years ago 10 or so planes were found buried in Burma

Spitfires:

-jungle-Burma-flying-years.html

After being led to the area by an eye-witness, the farmer's team dug a
borehole and sent a camera down to capture footage of the crates, which
were found to be in 'really good condition'.

Mr Cundall has now been given exclusive rights to all three sites under
investigation in Burma.
