I wonder how many operators laid out a counterpoise wire or two?
Grounding is good, but maybe not always enough for the RF in some soils.
As far as opening the battery box and cell caps, did a GRC-106 at about
50 amps stress the batteries that much, especially if the M-151 had the
60 or 100 amp generator?  Drinking the water first would  condition it
to be more conductive as well, but make many people unwilling to pull up
the ground rod when it was time to move on.
