[Milsurplus] A moment of silence...

9 years ago my basement flooded due to a burst water heater. My basement is
about 2000 square feet that is unfinished, however flor to ceiling of
electronics. Mostly antique and military radios along with my ham radio
station Also tons of literature and about 200K vacuum tubes. The water was
only 2 inches high, but evenly distributed over the entire basement. Never
considering insurance, my youngest son at the time who was 26 was living
with me so we immediately went to work trying to clean it up. The more we
worked the sicker I got seeing the extensive damage caused all over the
basement, which led me to think of insurance. They were here immediately
with a cleanup crew. Of course the crew did as much if not more damage than
the water, but the insurance agent told me to just put everything on the
list. It took me over a year to complete the list, and when finished I had
over 1000 line items and around a total of 20K items on the list with a
value of over $200K. The good thing is that my better and rarer early radio
stuff was upstairs. Anyway, they paid every penny I claimed without argument
and on top of it the cost of mold removal and prevention. So for me, at lest
from a financial perspective, I have no complaints at all. 73 - Mike

It's only going to get worse as the climate changes continue. What this
means is that you should not be storing valuable items like collected radio
gear in locations like basements which are subject to flooding. Most mil
gear can easily handle higher temperatures such as found in attics and that
might be a better choice of storage location if available. Also, a damp
basement promotes mold.
If you do need to store items in a basement which might flood, see if at
least you can get the gear listed on your homeowner's insurance. This can
usually be done for a small fee.
