A couple more thoughts on the LF-MF transmitters.
Altho a use for an MF transmitter has been posited as for communicating with ships, and this is no scientific survey, but every account I have read where
a plane communicated with a ship, and I mean a single ship, as in freighter, the communication was by light gun; I may have even read of messages dropped
by planes onto ships. Maybe the Coast Guard planes in such encounters did not carry any LF-MF transmitting equipment.

I also wondered about aircraft LF-MF use in far northern environs where HF may not have been reliable. The reason why the U.S. Army bought all those
Mackay 128 receivers for their Alaska radio system in 1940-1942 ( I don't recall exact dates. )
