When I started as a teenager in the late 1960's money was tight. I like to build but had basic tools.
I realized quickly that one had to be a metalworker to build vacuum tube equipment.
One option was to modify cheap surplus equipment. This is one reason why there is so much hacked equipment these days.
The second option was building with transistors.
I was into QRP so I started building solid state QRP transmitters. I got lots of my parts for Poly Paks since prices were low. I recall building a 40 meter transmitter from an artice in "Electronics Illustrated. It used a 2N697 in the final. It was built on a perfboard. later on I started building in PC board.
