I was sitting at the kitchen table tinkering with
the BC-9 and loop. Had some 12-volt gel
cells feeding the DC-DC converters to get
away from a line-connected supply and
using an 01A in the oscillator. 01As show
very little power out when connected to
the tank-and-link, but works OK for listening.
The shift on TX was about 3.5 KC with
this tube.
So I hear a fellow down in Killeen, about
190 miles away above Austin calling CQ
on 3555 KC.
Just for fun.... I can still hear 3 KCs, so I
tuned the rig 3 KC above him and gave
him a call. And he came back to me!
I was astonished. Now, we couldn't really
QSO- he tried a few times but just couldn't
pull my call out- but that he heard me at
all is just amazing to me.
Even after all these years,
Radio is still Magic.
