It's from a 900,nnn series large Navy book on equipment maintenance notes. I had some photocopies of this article but they're gone. I think the mod only took it to about 7 MHz but
shows it could be done and a few hundreds of kHz more would not be a big deal. Maybe Nick has the book on his site. 
Of course the radio already does 160 and 80 as-is. But adding 40 meters i think makes it a lot more useful. I don't know if i'd use the single tube 837 in VFO mode on 40, though it has
been reported as perfectly okay on 80. 

I think Geoff Fors W6NVH has information on SPF restoration and variants on his website.  He knows these sets very well by now.

I have a badly mauled TBX-8 here which I would love to resurrect and use. Where might one find this Navy mod?
