[Milsurplus] Pacific gear

Who knows? Speculation would be TCS crystals being they are large and would be noticeable. Early TBX had huge rocks, MAB/DAV and 611 set had smaller rocks. Would assume that anything below that size would disappear into the sand so fast as to not be noticeable. ARC-1 sets had lots of rocks. The thing here would be to try to find another corroborating account from the same period but assuming the writer was a RM that somewhat precludes it being a mistake like confusing crystals with something like spare tubes. That's what I would have assumed. Also people do make mistakes and have faulty memories, I am wrong at least three times a day.
It's a good story otherwise.
Think the story about use of the Japanese equipment at Guadalcanal papers in at least two or three places from what I recall including the "History of the Signal corps" series (Green Books) where things like the issues with the radios at Tarawa is documented almost everywhere.

Also what would the crystals have been for? The GO, at least the -9 which was the main one in use, has no provision for crystals. Nor, for that matter does the TBW. And he didn't mention any other gear.

Another Seattle area ( Bellevue, WA ) man, Jack Strayer, told me he saw the older gear still in PBYs post-war. It's hard to figure when and why gear was changed. Chet Wsner told me that when he flew E Coast to Caribbean patrol flights, their PBYs equipment was changed to BC-348, ART-13 in 1943. Why? Who knows.
