I do not think an HP 201 would bring you $50 on the west coast. $25-30 and you could call it success.
Hacked BC-348s and ARBs are nobody's "gateway into the hobby". In fact, i kind of wonder if anyone at all is looking for a gateway to go thru.
If anyone's looking for a gateway, it's with the same mindset as militaria and vehicle collectors, and they're after unhacked, good looking mobile
equipment that was emblematic of its time. Some antique radio enthusiasts are willing to take on the unhacking restoration of a mil radio, but
that's definitely a small subset. Yes, one learns it is easy to buy a pile of junk, but it's so hard to sell it, and as you say, the shaved down actual
selling prices make it seem hardly worthwhile, but you have to thin down the pile, and we like this stuff enough that we can't just give it away
into destroying hands.
