I think both your friend, AND Hugh have valid points. I think BOTH issues are at play here. 

The impedance change at the tube caused by increasing the voltage will, indeed, cause the 
effects that Hugh mentions ( I think that is called "Miller effect") but I don't think that that 
single thing by itself can be the cause of a 12KHz jump in frequency.

I think your friend is correct too.

Like someone else said here, I'd love to see how it works with an original loop antenna.
