Herewith photos of the TBY AC power supply I found. TBY = Navy, Marines back pack VHF radio, early WW2; also carried on ships as emergency VHF voice;
also on cargo vessels in convoy for voice communications on 72 MHz to preclude U-Boat discovery.
When I opened the unit, I found a folded schematic. Thank you ever so much, someone there in the past, for leaving this in there ! The schematic is captioned
"TBY POWER UNITS DESIGNED AND BUILT AT P.H.N.Y. HALLER" Thank you Mr. Haller ! I looked up "P.H.N.Y." and it was "Philadelphia Navy Yard".
One thing that helps date this to WW2 is that the schematic indicates 2 versions. "Note #2 Battery case added to rectifier unit when 'A' battery rectifier is not
available." The rectifier referred to is a large selenium rectifier. Apparently supplies of this part were limited. This is the same style and approx. size part seen in the
TBX receiver A.C. supply. This unit uses a #80 tube for the B+ voltages. The knob is for adjusting the overall A voltages. If the schematic hadn't been there,
I would still be puzzled as to the manufacture. I didn't guess Naval facility because based on what I'd seen in the past; I would expect the nameplate to
proudly identify the source. The "Radio Lab" name still puzzles me. I don't know what that might be about. A small unit for working special radio fixtures
and such for ships?
