Another account of the patrol by Sergeant Charles (Monk) Arndt, one of
the three survivors, confirms no radio, no machine guns, no BARS,
and no grenades. It is in The Old Breed, George McMillan,
Infantry Journal Press, 1949.
McMillan interviewed Arndt in 1948 for the book, which is
a history of the First Marine Division in World War II. It says
that a corporal went out to the water's edge and started
firing tracers, trying to get an SOS back, without success.
About 1AM a captain said someone had to go back
for help. Arndt volunteered and swam back with the news.
