Good Morning Dave and group,
I have used a circuit similar to that which Dave shared with
good results in both high and low voltage applications. In
addition to giving some regulation it is a handy way to
use a transformer having excessive secondary voltage.
The input can be directly from the rectifier, unfiltered, and
the necessary filtering after the FET.
Should anyone wish to try this approach I have a supply
of these zener diodes available:
1N4743 - 13 Vz
1N4747 - 20 Vz
1N4750 - 27 Vz
1N4753 - 36 Vz
1N4757 - 51 Vz
To encourage further developments I will send a reasonable
quantity of any/all types to those interested for the cost of
postage. Obsolete switching supplies are a good source of FETs.
