I think that the two most common methods are ten of the 9V's or a DC-DC
converter made in Sicily. The latter runs off of three D-cells and includes
auto-on circuitry. An MV restoration group in CO has built a newer DC-DC
converter the same physical size as the BA-38 and that runs off of rechargable
batteries contained in the substitute. But I don't think that they have sold
it commercially. Reportably works quite well but would probably be more
expensive than the Italian one.
Many years ago, an outfit on the left coast made and sold prewired boxes or
holders as replacements for the BA-38 and several other WW-II or Korean War
vintage batteries. Those still turn up fron time to time. Breck S. at one
time was selling a partial kit to make a substitute BA-38. The buyer
supplied his own hardware and 9V connectors. I assembled one of them for a
customer, and they worked pretty well. The design was on his web site but either
he took it down or he changed the URL, because the link I have no longer
works.
