I have an HF RBM-5 & none of those caps were ever replaced yet it works fine. I did not perform any tests on them, however. A couple of the bathtub units did need replacement.

Subject: [Milsurplus] RBM Questions

This weekend, I picked up a set of RBM receivers and power supply, and I have a few questions. I'm currently working on the MF receiver. It still has all its original Navy tubes and looks like it was never worked on.

Here are my questions:

1. Are the .01 postage-stamp Aerovox caps in this receiver mica or paper? The manual says that they're mica but I have never seen mica caps before in this large a value.

2. What gives with the bathtub caps? In my set, several are leaking what appears to be brown wax. I've worked on quite a few military sets but I've never before encountered military bathtub caps leaking wax like this. Needless to say, I'm in the process of replacing them all.

3. In what applications were the RBM receivers used during the war?

As always, thank you for your help and guidance. The HF receiver, which will be next on the bench, supposedly has a dead short, so I'll soon be tracking that down. Given my experience with the MF receiver, the bathtub caps will be my primary suspect.
