[Milsurplus] Carbon mics, more.....

Yup. Though it seems inconceivable that we entered the war with that
throat mic as a mainstay of aircraft intercommunication, a Bell
Laboratories engineering analysis described it as "/a good idea but for
the fact that the sound available from the larynx is basically
unintelligible/". It wasn't until 1942ish that Bell Labs was finally
called upon to do some intelligibility research of various commonly used
microphones and earphones in a noisy environment. A lot of good
products came about as a result, and were recorded for posterity in one
of the NDRC reports (Division 17, Combat Instrumentation) that was
issued at the end of the war. One of the best products was the
repurposing of the T-45 as the basis for the first boom mic headset, the
H-46. (The T-45 at least was a true noise cancelling design...it was
just infernally uncomfortable, especially if you had a moustache...)
