In the not recent past we on milsurplus list discussed the German WW2
distinctive vehicle antennas,
known as 'frame antennas'. There were references to a U.S. Army publication
that referred to these
antennas as loop antennas for NVIS service.
I found the reference that absolutely kills the 'loop antenna' idea:
"D 963/8 MERKBLATT fuer die behelfsmaessige herrichtung von handelsueblichen
kraftwagen als
Ersatz-Funkkraftwagen" ( 1941 )
roughly, "Bulletin for set-up of standard commercial trucks as stand-in
Radio Trucks."
This shows how a "Dachantenne" ( "roof antenna" ) can be made by having two
wooden poles, one
elevated at each side of the truck bed, and running a wire zig-zag back and
forth between these poles,
and one end of the zig-zag is simply led down to the radio transmitter. A
'capacity antenna'; almost a
point source in terms of radiation pattern.
