[Milsurplus] Lubricants

I have used Mobil One 0W-15 oil for many years on small gears and
bearings and never had any problems. It is important to get any old
stale lubricant out with a solvent first. I use brake parts cleaner from
an auto supply to clean out the old lubricant and dirt from parts that
are all metal. If a plastic part is being cleaned, Stoddard solvent is
safer because the brake cleaner might damage some plastics. For grease,
a light synthetic has worked very well. I have never seen these turn
rancid or oxidize, they are just as fluid years after application as
when applied, but periodic cleaning and relube to keep dirt out of
bearings and gears is still important.
