In 1946 the Air Force Amateur Radio System(AFARS) in Canada was
formed as a back up emergency communications system similar to MARS
and after consulting with them.
I note in their published operational procedure that "V" was to be
used in place of the common "de" on CW. They had two out of band
frequencies at 4290Khz and another above the 14mhz band. As a former
member of that group which has long since been disbanded, I recall
using that call separator on 4290. I had forgotten about it until
reading the formation documents of AFARS this week.
