The RBS or RBM-hf have an IF of 1240 kHz. The selectivity switch should
be labeled "BROAD" and "MORE BROAD".
Now also take a twist of the dial and see how many khz / tuning knob
revolution at around 15 MHz. The circuitry is admirable, i think, with a
4 -gang tuning cap and a pentode mixer, but the dial mechanics and the
selectivity put it more in the toy class.
The RBM-lf has the same dial gearing but as the bands are much smaller
at LF-MF, the freq travel per knob revolution is usable and reasonable.
The IF, IIR, is down around 190 kHz, so you have useful selectivity.
Some people have used the LF receiver as a 2nd conversion, picking off
the 1240 kHz from the HF receiver, but you still have the fast tuning
rate of the HF receiver.
I was told Uncle Sam paid $1000 each for these receivers. I haven't
found a list that verifies that, but i don't really doubt it.
They ARE nice looking machines, and pretty lightweight, except for the
power supplies.
