[Milsurplus] Headset - ?'s

Hi George,
Just to give you a heads up, Armor All is nothing more than old War Surplus
Furniture polish and it is VERY BAD on rubber and vinyl.
It is not as bad on rubber as it is on vinyl, but it leads to faster
weathering and aging. Armor All has fooled the public into thinking it is
good stuff, but tire manufacturers will tell you never to use it. There is
a compound called "Tire Black" (I think it is) that works wonders on rubber
and is recommended by the tire guys.
And like Robert said, rubber does not restore well after it has cracked and
dries, but that compound does help the looks.
And, unless you want to use it on your cheap shop furniture, throw that
bottle of Armor All away.
Bill

Bob (Downs) sure has that right about brake fluid and rubber; at least the
DOT 3 variety. I've had the misfortune of restoring a couple of Series IIA
Land Rovers that got DOT 3 put into the system. You don't rebuild, you toss
everything and replace with new. Way back when, it was easy to tell the
right stuff - -Girling Crimson was the correct brake (and clutch) fluid.
With its bright red color (colour) it was unmistakable.
On a more relevant topic - -the rubber earphone caps; Old rubber doesn't
"restore" well, but you can clean it up and make it look better with
ArmorAll.
