[Milsurplus] Little "Field Day" Genny - ethanol/gasoline

It is the standard across the country and the supposed max content.. But,
last year, Texas did a study and sampled a cross-section of gas stations and
companies and the results were bad. Some mixes ran up in the high 20s %
Alcohol.. Specially the off brands. This was when oil was more expensive
and corn was down.

The only companies that consistently had just the legal max of 10% were Exon
and Shell. Not the cheapest guys on the block usually, but I have now
switched to nothing but those two companies here. 25% Alcohol is NOT GOOD
for your engine - unless it is spec'd as a FLEX fuel engine.

Also, Mercury outboard (Mercury Marine) did a study because they were having
maintenance issues they thought were unusual, and they got the same results.
You need to be careful what you buy, and you definitely do not want to drive
up to that off-brand cheapest station and fill up, nor buy gas at a COSCO or
Walmart station unless you check where they are getting their discount gas.
It is cheaper for a reason usually.

Bill

Ethanol in gasoline has been around for years. Cars accept it. Why haven't
the small engines manufacturers adapted their engines for the mix?

I bought a Sears lawn mower last year and in included a packet of fuel
stabilizer and recommended adding it when using gas with ethanol. They also
recommended using as with a maximum of 10% ethanol.

The gas in New Jersey and neighboring states contains 10% ethanol. Is this
the standard across the country?
