...which is poisonous. 

I rountinely rip the darned things out and replace them with silicon. In this 
case, I doubt if one would have to add a series resistor to mimic the very 
poor resistance of the selenium rectifier.

 I´d look there first since, if the
> rectifier shorts, it will also pull down the filament bus.
