Before troubleshooting the entire receiver, let me take a shot in the dark.
The selenium rectifier unit used to supply dc to the antenna relay
frequently goes west. (In point of fact, sooner or later is it almost
guaranteed to fail.) When it does, it produces a profound stink. I'd look
there first since, if the rectifier shorts, it will also pull down the
filament bus.
