The Samos receiver that Hugh mentioned covers 90 to 470 MHz in one relatively small package. It does not use plug-ins. It is obviously an intercept receiver. I remember when I first got mine thinking “wow” we never had anything like that in WWII. Even now I am not aware of anything even close that we may have had back then. I do not consider the APR series in the same category. 73 – Mike

I don't understand why a receiver with a 2:1 frequency coverage in one band is any big deal. As examples from roughly the same period, both the TCS and the Hammarlund Super-Pro SP-100 and SP-200 sets cover 2:1 in all or most bands. The AN/APR-1 and AN/APR-4 typically cover about 3:1 in each band. The only reason that the US or British/US VHF aviation airborne and ground sets only cover roughly 100-156 MC is that that was and with minor modifications still is the assigned VHF band for military and civil aviation. It had nothing directly to do with technology.

Yes, wide freq range, but if you look at the schematic, you see it is nothing to rave about.
IIR, ‘Electron’ magazine has a photo of it in some German battleship.
With the diode mixer, i think it should radiate pretty well.
