I don't understand why a receiver with a 2:1 frequency coverage in one band
is any big deal. As examples from roughly the same period, both the TCS
and the Hammarlund Super-Pro SP-100 and SP-200 sets cover 2:1 in all or most
bands. The AN/APR-1 and AN/APR-4 typically cover about 3:1 in each band.
The only reason that the US or British/US VHF aviation airborne and ground
sets only cover roughly 100-156 MC is that that was and with minor
modifications still is the assigned VHF band for military and civil aviation. It had
nothing directly to do with technology.
