I was given an SMK-1, which outputs not more than 200 mW. I made contacts all up and 
down the west coast and into Texas with the thing. And not just "hello - 5nn-goodbye" types 
either but good solid QSOs.

I was amazed. The entire thing is not as large as a pack of cigarettes. My antenna is a 55' 
single-trap vertical.

And, I STILL firmly believe that DFing a receiver LO is myth. At best, it was a propaganda 
ploy.
