[Milsurplus] Bomber Fantasy Camp, OK by me - me too.

Well, Ken talking about looking down reminds me of my experience almost 60
years ago. My family immigrated to the USA as refugees from Hungary in early
November of 1956. I was 11 at the time. We flew by some military transport
prop plane out of Austria. It was a very large plane, but, outfitted with
seats. I have no idea of the nomenclature. Regardless, it was neat,
especially to a 11 year old. It also had some Americans on it as I recall
one guy giving me a dime. Our first stop was at Shannon AFB in Ireland. I am
not sure why, maybe to re-fuel, but we were there for about a half a day.
Then due to inclement weather, we were diverted to the Azores, where we
spent about a day in the middle of a sandstorm. Then on to the US, and then
is when the excitement happened. Sometime along the way, one of the engines
caught on fire. Flames going all over the place, I still remember that well
today. It seems like we were still several hours from land. We had to really
fly low, in fact so low, that I was able to see people on larger fishing
vessels. Everyone was scared shitless, but as a 11 year old I thought it was
again pretty neat. So, we landed thankfully at Gander AFB in Newfoundland.
Eventually they found another plane for us and we flew on to the US. I do
not remember where we landed, but, we were bused to Camp Kilmer in NJ. Seems
that is where all the Hungarian refugees were processed. We spent a couple
of days there and since we had a sponsor, he came to pick us up and took us
to his home on LI, NY. So, I started out in NJ and now I am back here again
and I think for good. Hope I did not bore you guys with this memory. 73 -

Well, mouning those engines (4360s?) as pushers caused a problem with
cooling, as I understand it. But what a neat airplane! :-)

The sound of a B-36 was unmistakeable...

There was an airshow in Missoula, Montana once while I lived there. A B-52
from Malmstrom AFB near Great Falls was supposed to make two passes, one
high and one lower.

The crew must have enjoyed the view, as they made passes all day. The final
one was at an altitude which was below the level of the control tower, where
I was standing at the time. I was looking down onto the top of the wing as
it went by.

The entire runway and all the ground around it shook.

I was very impressed.
