Was looking thru RADIO NEWS for June 1942 and in the column, "QRD? de GY"
saw a reference to Karl Baarslag,
author of "SOS to the Rescue", before WW2. Article says he recently was
commissioned a Lieutenant and that
"He decided that unless his union would throw out the Commies and
subversives, he would form a union of his own
and open it up for fellows who were all-Americans......So it wasn't long
before the ROU was stepping into the big
league...."
So does this mean Baarslag was one of the founders of the ROU ? Was the ROU
a competitor to the ARTA ?
( American Radio Telegraphers Union ) ? Not a lot of information is
available on any of these nouns. There is no
Wiki entry for Baarslag; I found only an obit from the N.Y. Times, which
also fills in more of the later story:
"Karl Herman William Baarslag, an author and former research director of a
Senate subcommittee headed by Joseph R. McCarthy, died of a heart attack
Tuesday at the Palm Beach Martin County Hospital. He was 83 years old.
Mr. Baarslag, who lived in Tequesta, Fla., and Cape Hatteras, N.C. was
appointed in July 1953 to the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on
Investigations by Senator McCarthy, the Wisconsin Republican whose
controversial career centered on his efforts to suppress Communism.
In 1956, Mr. Baarslag was employed as a consultant by the House Committee on
Un-American Activities. He was a professional staff member of the Senate
Republican Policy Committee at the time of his retirement in 1963.
Earlier, Mr. Baarslag worked for the American Legion as research director on
subversion and un-American activities, and edited a newsletter called Firing
Line.
In World War II, Mr. Baarslag served in the anti-subversive branch of the
Office of Naval Intelligence, reaching the rank of lieutenant commander. "
( end quote. ) There seems to be lists of Baarslag related paper held by
universities, but not the actual material itself.
There needs to be more information published on Baarslag, ROU, and ARTA.
