Developed too late for Vietnam, the ASX-2 was intended to provide F-4J pilots & RIOs with a passive display as to the aircraft type being scanned by their fire control radars in order to minimize fratricide kills in the battle space. I believe it was designed to interpret jet turbine signatures using a memory containing that data. I've heard that 6 test or pre-production units were built for evaluation at Pax River NAS. One is  said to be on display there. I have picked up parts of another & am looking for circuit boards, manuals, etc.
The concept behind the ASX-2  dates back to at least the APG-15 tail gun radar in the B-29-B. The APX-15 component discriminated between the high rpms of interceptors & the lower rpms of friendly bombers and illuminated go/no go indicator lamps at the tail gunner's station.
