I do seem to remember that they will oscillate if the shielding in place.

I don't know, and I don't think the manual addresses this, otherwise I think 
I'd know. Perhaps as a stability advantage at HF ?
You would otherwise think using 1f instead of 1/2f would minimize the 
engineering design difficulty.

BTW, I asked Pete Peterson, of Seattle, what he thought about the RU. He 
used them in the immediate post war years, flying
as radio op on PBYs donated to the Philippine government. PBYs still with 
standard early war equipment of RF + GO-9.
I kind of expected him to say something about how crappy a receiver it was, 
but he instead seemed to respect it and said it
worked fine. However his use of it was in the CW mode. He did comment on 
that it was a bunch of work to retune the GO-9
for frequency changes when doing the position reports.
