Ed, I wish I were closer to where you are, so I could attend a presentation
by you summarizing the exhibition.
I am so impressed by the new compact plug-n-play microwave systems.
I have years passed, worked on old Bell system multiple-bay heavy-metal
microwave systems, as a board
changer only, and I recall those old systems as monsters.
I still have a couple boxes of subassemblies from scrapped out units I kept
rather than toss into the scrap
metal tub. Probably those will be useless enough that they'll be the next
thing I toss, except for some
TWT tubes, which I recognized as probable collectibles.

no cost but you do have to register at the door. Spent a busy day
doing some press coverage there today. What a thrill! Ed Sharpe ( with
journalist hat on)

Garrett,
if memory serves me correctly, the old FSN system numbering simply added two more digits after the first four.
5805-455-4555 became 5805-00-455-4555
00 being the United States.
It was assumed all of the FSNs prior to the conversion were US originated, even if not absolutely true.

Subject: [Milsurplus] Need help with FSN's.
I have a box of old electronic components sealed in small (~1.5X2.5 inches) metal cans. The dates on them are mostly 1956. They have the FSN's and part nos., but no component description. I have tried to find a cross reference source for FSN's to NSN's with no luck. I'd just like to know what these things are without unsealing the cans. Also, several bags of large unused new resistors from 1968 with no resistance markings or color codes, but they ohm out at 30, 40 and 50 ohms. I got this box of stuff many years ago and just stumbled across it again, and can't remember where I picked it up. Thanks for any time and help.
Garrett Fulton

Yes Hue it is amazing...I experienced a day of future shock today. I get
trade journals etc... but it is somehow different when it is there in
physical form you can touch.. next year IMS show will be in San Francisco if
that is closer to where you are. every year a different location. Did you
work on any of the TD-2 bell gear? We have a fascination with that system
here. Let us know what you might have surplus. Yea... we can use some
twt tubes too for display.
I just get excited about all phases of this stuff!

great article Nick!!! - everyone should save a copy of this lest
IEEE crams it behind their paywall.
For further reading SMECC recommends Army Airways Communication System
book titled Highways in the Sky by Louis Shores..
Enjoy!
