[Milsurplus] Hallicrafters R-274 Fact

At one time, the US military was concerned about getting all of a
particular item from one supplier. R-390s come to mind, and Tektronix
clone oscilloscopes made by Lavoie and a lot of other test equipment. In
most cases, parts from one were interchangable with the other. The
R-274 receivers of different letters/manufacturers departed from that,
they are fairly close in design and circuitry but drastically different
in mechanical design and layout. Why was that done instead of giving
them different numbers altogether? I guess politics in the early cold
war could have caused some strange deals to happen.
