Somewhat confused. The CV-157 IS an SSB converter designed for the R-390 non A. Ray seems to say that it is a RTTY converter, if I read his comments correctly. The CV-157 wasn't part of the GRC-26D which is the only version that had R-390's installed, as far as I know.
As for the R-390A not being a band cruser, well I think most of the problem is with the greased up clock works and binding of the mc and kc shafts when they come through the front panel. Take a tip from the clock collectors and don't grease gears, just sparingly lube pivot points and bearings. Properly lubed and if you will re-center those two bushings in the front panel, you will be amazed.Jim

As a SSB receiver the R-390 is lacking with or without an external SSB converter, I know this will work up all the R-390 crowd and don’t get me wrong, the R-390 is a great AM receiver and good for any fixed frequency operation but as a SSB receiver almost any commercial or military SSB radio will be smaller and more user friendly. The things that come to mind are the lack of a good AGC system in the CW mode, mechanical tuning that’s a bear to band cruse with and unless your into rack mounted equipment size and weight that’s an issue. So myself I would not bother with a CV-157But that’s just me, opinions will vary!
