Ray,
Up through the middle of 1943, you're probably correct on the ZB or
AN/ARR-1 although through the first half of 1942 the receiver would have been more
likely to be an RU. From late 1943 through the end of the War, Mike is
probably correct. AN/ARR-2 had the "honor" of having the first and second
dynamotors and the third and fourth receivers whose noimenclatures were assigned
under the new "AN" nomenclature system. Plus to use volume of units
appearing in Surplus as an indicator of how many were made you have to consider
more than just how many ads appeared in early Post War surplus catalogs. And
where you live and when and where you've looked. AN/ARR-2 remained in
service in quantity into the late 1950's and some into the early or mid 1960's.
So very few if any would have been surplused out at the end of WW-II. I've
owned about a dozen of the R-4's and currently still have five. Most came
out of Barksdale AFB in the mid 60's.
So what was most common depends upon what year you are claiming for the
display setup.
