Greyhound is an  alternative. They can be rough in handling  because 
items are slid into and out of the cargo bays and  crash into one 
another sideways, and passenger baggage can be piled on top. On the 
other hand, there is less chance of things being dropped or thrown, and 
the bus rides far smoother than trucks and most trains.  If you pack 
well it's not a problem. Cost is less than other carrriers, you do have 
to take items to their stations and pick up from there. Transit time is 
moderate because they try to avoid transloading freight and a bus going 
where needed may only  come through once a day.  Their website can be 
challenging and station freight hours are unusual, but I work around it 
all and have had good results.
