re the size being small, consider the 'football' loops carried on many US planes - it was 
certainly smaller also.

I think many ( most ? ) German planes carried a loop antenna that was of ferrite bar 
construction, and motor controlled. So there was no actual circular loop apparent.
I have such a loop antenna here, but have not looked at it in actual years.
