[Milsurplus] Russian tubes & components

Thanks, Glen. I was definitely hoping for a positive report. While I’m on
the other end of the power scale (100w out is QRO for me. :-) ) I’m glad to
know that the tubes are worth the cost. One of the tubes of interest is a
submini pillar-type dual control grid pentode where both control grids are
effectively coplanar and have equal authority over the signal. Another tube
(not a submini) has two plates that are likewise effectively coplanar and
electrically equal. I’m not sure about the latter yet but the former will
make a good mixer for both Rx & Tx use. There are a few others that have
caught my attention and I want to experiment with.

Best Regards,

Sometimes I pretend to be normal but it gets boring so I go back to being
me.

A couple of years ago, I built a 160-meter linear amplifier using the
Russian GI-7bT tubes and am slowly building a 160-meter through 10-meter
linear using the GS-31b tubes.

Also, am gathering the parts to make a 6-meter linear and a 2-meter linear
using GI-7bT tubes.

I have a Hallicrafters HT-33A, that came from the factory with most of the
HT-33B changes made, that has a bad PL-172 tube. Also, the amplifier had
been severely "hacked" and the results are not "pretty"! I am seriously
considering replacing the PL-172 with a Russian GS-31b tube.

It has been my experience that, at least for the high power tubes, the
Russian tubes are definitely worth the money.

Do any of you highly esteemed gentlefolk have any experience with the
subject line subject? I’ve been looking at some of their cold war surplus
for use in a few projects here, concentrating on the pillar-type submini
pentodes. I find them utterly fascinating along with a few other subminis
with ratings that blur the line between submini and mini.

One of the projects is a walkermobile/park bench portable crystal control CW
rig for 40-10m (harmonically related bands only) good for around 10w out and
possibly convertible to DSB later on. From what I can see, such a wee
beastie should be easy on batteries except for the PA and even there the
average power will be fairly easily manageable.

Anyway, if anyone here has any sage advice – or advice of any other
seasoning – it would be greatly appreciated.
