Now that this thread seems to have paused briefly, I'll point out something 
that no one seems to have considered.  The T-17 is similar to the TS-9, 11, 
13 and 15 in that over a 25 odd year period, it was made by maybe a dozen 
different contractors.  Any radio spec'd to use the T-17 or any of the 
handsets will work OK with all of them because as complete assemblies, they are 
all functionally interchangable.  However, when it comes to spare parts, 
including the carbon mic element, that isn't always the case.  If you are 
experimenting and determine that a certain later carbon mic element will fit in and 
work in a T-17-B made by Shure in 1943, you should state it that way.  It 
may or may not work in one made by someone else in 1929 or 1954.
