So sounds like a T1 transmitter should fit right in there.
If you have a (now) old 500-type telephone with a G handset it will
have that kind of transmitter in it.  Or you can get them from lots
of places - my favorite is Mike Sandman near Chicago, who also has
the electret replacement units.  The electret replacement is made for
a late handset with a modular cord, but you can peel off the outer
case and connect direct to the wiring.
