Seeing the BC-669 at Adak reminded me of something i had wondered about.
That was, what kind of radio was being used by the Army weather station
that was captured by Japan at Kiska or Attu ( don't offhand recall which ).
The SCR-284 / BC-654 wouldn't have been in wide production yet. The
SCR-178/ 179 was too feeble and quirky to put to permanent wx station
use. So, i conclude, my conclusion, as i had considered back then, was
that it probably was just the good ole BC-669. With a gas engine generator
to power it, altho i don't know what smallish PE-* that would have been.
A large total dunnage, but - once in place, who cares what it weighs?
I tentatively compare this to the "Weather Warning Station" of the Japanese
Army ( "IJN" ), which consisted of a 4-tube regenerative receiver with plug
in coils, and a 1-tube transmitter, crystal controlled, with plug in coils,
and CW only.
