Nick makes a very good point. Some numbers can be ambiguous.
About 40 years ago, I was working on a word processor for the Chinese
language. Data entry was from an ASCII terminal, and each ideograph was
described by a coding systen called OSCO. The operator had to learn this
coding method, which used a combination of 3 or 4 ASCII letters to
describe each ideogram.
The 'puter (a Data General Nova 1200) used a look-up-table to convert the
entered letters into Chinese Telecode numbers (STC), used since roughly
WW1, and from the STC, displayed the ideograph on a TV monitor.
I(n the case of an ambiguity, and there were many, it would display the
most common ideograph first. A touch on the SPACE key, would display
alternates.
IMO, that kind of thing would help resolve the numbers interpretaton.
